ISRO Technology Transfer

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has officially transferred its proprietary Silica Aerogel technology to Karnest Technology Pvt. Ltd. to facilitate its commercial production and widespread industrial application. Developed primarily at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), this ultra-lightweight material—often referred to as “frozen smoke”—is a world-class thermal insulator capable of withstanding extreme temperatures.

By utilizing ISRO’s cost-effective ambient pressure drying method, Karnest Technology aims to manufacture aerogel powder and composite sheets for diverse sectors, including:

  • Aerospace & Defense: Thermal protection for launch vehicles and cryogenic systems.

  • Building & Construction: Energy-efficient insulation for green buildings.

  • Thermal Apparel: High-performance insulation for winter wear and Arctic gear.

This technology transfer, facilitated by NSIL and IN-SPACe, represents a significant “spin-off” of space-grade innovation into the Indian private sector, promoting the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative by reducing dependence on expensive imported insulation materials.
